Excelsior! My name is Reynaldo Lopez, I am a native New Yorker through and through. As most children, I desired to become a doctor or lawyer; I clung to this desire until the junior year of my secondary education at Townsend Harris High School. During my junior year, I involved myself with the Science Olympiad organization and found myself attracted to the sciences, especially engineering. Around that time, a few colleagues and I decided to form the first US First Robotics team at our school. It was this team that really set my current path as a mechanical engineer. There, I honed my skills in machining, drive train assembly, welding, LabVIEW, and various others that were essential to engineering the robot. By the time the competition was over, I had decided that my dream was to be an engineer, someone who can improve the world one idea at a time. And that was what led me to apply to Columbia University’s engineering school and delve into a world of mental brutality.

At my stay at Columbia, I have realized that my passion lies specifically in the Mechanical Engineering track of Energy Systems. Why Energy Systems? Energy is the heart and blood of every mechanical system that drives our society forward. It is what provides the propulsion for planes to soar through the sky, and the power for cars to zip along a highway. It is the driving force that sustains life. Energy systems have become essential in our everyday lives and its progression and transmutation is necessary to propel us forward as a society. My goal is to be a part of making energy systems more efficient or even create new systems to topple the relics. This is why I am a Mechanical Engineer.
