Welcome to the
Combustion and Catalysis Laboratory
at Columbia University

The Combustion and Catalysis Lab at Columbia University is directed by Professor Marco J. Castaldi. The main focus is the thermal and catalytic conversion of carbon based material to desired products. For example, municipal solid waste and biomass to synthetic fuels, liquid fuels to hydrogen and greenhouse gases (carbon-based) to fuels.

- Methane hydrate was grown in one of our smaller hydrate formation reactors and removed at atmospheric pressure and temperature, causing it to dissociate into water and CH4 gas which can be seen off gassing from the hydrate chunk. The hydrate you see in the video is pure methane hydrate and the flame is the combustion of methane as it transitions from the hydrate phase to the gaseous phase.
