New Manhattanvilles: Designing for Sustainable Density
(Prof. Upmanu Lall, Peter Macapia)

This studio will focus on the idea of the Compact City as a means of developing green and sustainable design. The idea of this studio is to develop new types of “buildings” that hybridize rather than segregate uses, as well as investigate new design strategies and technologies for building envelopes that provide greater and more flexible responses to the problems of energy consumption. We will also invent ways of incorporating (or grafting) these new ”Mixed-Use” designs with existing and historic structures. Our primary site is Columbia’s expansion plans for Manhattanville – we will design a large-scale project that weaves housing, laboratories, classrooms, dining services, retail, and other events etc. into an existing historic community within Harlem.
