Projects - Management of Solid Wastes in South Bronx

Management of Solid Wastes in South Bronx
(Profs. Laurie Hawkinson, Kate Orf, Karsten Millrath, Nickolas Themelis)

This studio will look at integrated waste management principles alongside issues of waterfront revitalization and community needs in South Bronx. New York is currently facing a garbage crisis that requires a re-thinking of how waste is generated, handled and disposed of within the city boundaries. The South Bronx community that the Studio will serve currently has 15 existing waste transfer stations that take up valuable land and dramatically affect public health. This Studio will explore different strategies for integrated waste management programs that could help remove these transfer stations from the community and revitalize the Hunts Point waterfront.
