Gowanus Eco-Retrieval: Rehabilitating the Public Place Site
(Profs. Patricia Culligan, GSAPP Prof. )

This studio will look at the re-development of 9 acre s of contaminated land along Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal. The land was the site of an old Manufactured Gas Plant, so both groundwater and soil on the site are contaminated and require remediation. The community has ideas for the site redevelopment that span from housing for the elderly to light industry to a water front park. This Studio will look at new ways to combine remediation of the site with beneficial land use and the development innovative design solutions that go beyond digging the contamination up, capping the site with asphalt and erecting a new super store.
