Funding Opportunities

Dean's Point of Opportunity Hiring Program

These funds can be used to recruit outstanding minority faculty, especially African-American, Latino/a, Asian/Pacific Islander and Native American faculty in areas where members of these groups are under-represented, and for the recruitment of other faculty with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and equal educational opportunity as evident in their research, teaching or service and mentoring activities. The Point-of-Opportunity appointments of outstanding candidates, at either the tenure-eligible or the tenured ranks, who advance the diversity goals of SEAS and the University. This appointment will be centrally supported for five years before departments assume responsibility for adsorbing them into their regular faculty rosters through the retirement or departure of other colleagues.

Grants.Gov

Grants.gov allows electronic access to more than 1,000 grant programs offered by all Federal grant-making agencies. Grants.gov replaces paper applications with electronic forms and requires electronic submission of all applications. It is the central portal for grant announcements and submissions.

Each of the 26 granting agencies will begin posting their funding opportunities, and requiring submission to Grants.gov according to their own timetable. Regularly visit agency websites to keep abreast of their evolving migration to electronic posting and receipt of applications. Please visit Grants.gov for more information.

ADVANCE FUNDING For WOMEN FACULTY

The Earth Institute NSF ADVANCE Program provides funding for women scientists, departments and research centers. Funding is available for:

  • Network-building research workshops chaired by women scientists;
  • Transition support during times of family care-giving;
  • Visiting fellows affiliated with the Earth Institute or School of Engineering and Applied Science;
  • Departments seeking to recruit, retain, and advance women scientists.

What is ADVANCE? Funded by a five-year, $4.2 million NSF award, the ADVANCE Program at the Earth Institute seeks to increase the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women scientists and engineers at Columbia.

Vice Provost for Diversity Initiatives, Professional Schools Fund

The Professional Schools Fund provides funding to help recruit and retain outstanding women and minority faculty, especially Black/African-American, Latino/a, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American/American Indian faculty, in areas where members of these groups are under-represented, as well as those faculty with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and equal educational opportunity as evident in their research, teaching, or service and mentoring activities. Funding is available for:

  • Short-Term Visiting Fellowships;
  • Long-Term Visiting Fellowships;
  • Research Fellowships

The proposal deadlines Academic Year 2007-2008 are December 1, 2007 and March 15, 2008

NYSTAR Faculty Development Program

The Faculty Development Program provides interim State assistance to either attract distinguished faculty from throughout the world to New York's academic research centers or retain leading researchers already working in Institutions of Higher Education in New York. Faculty receiving funding from this program are expected to develop, define, and conduct nationally and internationally recognized research with strong commercial potential; act as the focal point for multidisciplinary Research Teams in the institution; attract additional external funding from federal, foundation, and other public and private sources; and participate in entrepreneurial enterprises that will benefit New York State. Applicant Institutions may request up to a total of $750,000 over a period of up to three years to support the activities described. NYSTAR requires significant matching funds commitment.

Candidates must apply under one of the following five Technology Foci that hold significant potential for expanding the New York State economy. Proposals submitted in a Technology Focus other than one of these five and/or in an application area of a Technology Focus beyond the scope of the following will not be eligible:

Biotechnology
Energy and Environmental systems
Nanotechnology
Computational Sciences
Material Sciences
