A Special Opportunity for Distinguished Senior Scientists

The Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering (EEE) in the Henry Krumb School of Mines (HKSM), at Columbia University seeks to attract world leaders in their disciplines to fill two prestigious endowed faculty chairs:

The Henry Krumb Chair in Mining Engineering

The Stanley Thompson Chair in Chemical Metallurgy.

The Henry Krumb School of Mines at Columbia University is the oldest mining school in the United States. It has been the progenitor of Columbia’s Engineering School and can look back to two centuries of excellence. Earth and Environmental Engineering at HKSM continues this legacy into the 21 st century, as we build one of the premier engineering programs in the world with the goal of maximizing the quality of life for all through the sustainable use and responsible management of Earth’s resources.

The four interlinked areas that define our current research and education are: Sustainable materials and energy development and use, Minerals and Materials Processing/Green Engineering, Water and climate risk management, and Environmental Health Engineering. Five faculty members were recently hired in these areas. Two additionaljunior tenure-track positions in these areas are also being advertised. We invite nominations (including self nominations) for the two positions above.

The Henry Krumb Chair is intended for an individual with a Ph.D in Engineering or closely related field and exceptional achievement in any aspect of mining engineering or closely allied areas including minerals or fuels development, novel technologies, or environmental or health aspects of mining.

An ideal candidate for the Stanley Thompson Chair will have a Ph.D in Engineering or closely related field and have distinguished her/himself in an area closely related to materials. Novel applications to Green engineering, materials recycling and re-use, environmentally friendly extraction or processing technologies and to energy production are of particular interest.

In both cases, we seek dynamic individuals with demonstrated leadership skills who have a clear vision for addressing resource and environment problems we face in the 21 st century. Nominations should be sent to

The positions will remain open till filled. However, screening of candidates will start on December 15, 2005, and we hope to finish the recruitment process by the early summer 2006.
