The Earth and Environmental Engineering Minor

Columbia engineering students can broaden their education and enhance their career prospects by learning how the resources of the Earth - minerals, energy, water - can be utilized wisely, that is with full consideration of the effects of human activities on the environment. You can do it by registering for a Minor in Earth and Environmental Engineering, a program offered in collaboration with Civil Engineering.

This program will be of value to SEAS undergraduates who want to enrich their understanding of the effects of human activities, including the production of primary materials and managing of wastes, construction, transportation and other infrastructure on the environment. It also introduces the available technologies for resource recovery from wastes, pollution prevention and environmental remediation of land and water resources.

This program will be of value to SEAS undergraduates who plan to pursue careers in industry, business, and government agencies concerned with the effect of the production and use of primary materials on environmental quality. The technologies developed for the exploration, extraction, and processing of minerals and fuels are also applicable to resource recovery from wastes, pollution prevention and environmental remediation of land and water. The Earth and Environmental Engineering minor does not require additional course credits. It requires taking six courses as follows:

  • One of two industrial ecology (EAEE E4001, Industrial ecology of Earth resources; or EAEE E4011, Industrial ecology of manufacturing).
  • Two courses to be selected by the student among the following:
Introduction to Earth resources engineering (E.E.E. E3101):
Solid and hazardous waste management (E.E.E E4160y)
Production of inorganic materials (EAEE E4200y)
Field Studies in environ' Geophysics (E.E.E. E4005y)
Air pollution prevention and control (E.E.E. E4150y)
  • Three additional courses to be selected from the lists above or below. However, other environmentally-related Columbia courses may be approved by the student's advisor: Soil mechanics (C.E. E3141x)
Introduction to aquatic chemistry (E.E.E. E4003y)
Surface and subsurface engineering hydrology (C.E. E3250x)
Sampling and valuation for exploration and environmental assessment (E.E.E. E4256y)
Contaminant transport in subsurface systems (C.E. E4257)
    Environmental engineering: wastewater (C.E. E4163x).
