1. MEASURING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF NY TRANSPORTATION W/GUEST SPEAKERS FROM MTA 11/5
Measuring the Sustainability of New York TransportationWith Guest Speakers from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority:
Projjal Dutta, Director of Sustainability Initiatives
Thomas Abdallah, P.E., Chief Environmental Engineer, NYC Transit
In this session, Mr. Dutta will discuss the results of a blue ribbon commission study on the sustainability of the MTA both from an outward perspective (how does the NY metropolitan area compare with other parts of the US with respect to transportation) and an inward one (how does the MTA address resource consumption). Mr. Abdallah will discuss sustainability engineering initiatives in NYC Transit, with emphasis on energy efficiency, indoor environmental improvements, waste reduction, pollution prevention, and water conservation. Technologies discussed will include LED Signals, regenerative braking systems in subway cars, and Steel-Aluminum Composite Third Rail (for reduced transmission losses).

2. 2009 WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH COMMITTEE APPLICATION INFO SESSION 11/7
The CC/SEAS Office of Student Development and Activities (SDA) is currently accepting applications for the 2009 Women's History Month (WHM) Committee. We are looking for students who are interested and enthusiastic about contributing their creativity & time for the development of WHM. WHM through a collection of programs and events aims to highlight and celebrate the lives, experiences, and contributions of all women. Interested students should complete the attached application and return it to SDA in 515 Lerner Hall, Columbia campus. There will also be an information session on Friday, November 7th from 12:00-1:00pm where lunch will also be served. 3. UBS: SAN FRANCISCO AND LA OFFICES WINTER UNDERGRADUATE RECEPTION for JUNIORS
The San Francisco and LA offices of UBS Investment Bank will be hosting a Winter Undergraduate Reception.
This event has been planned specifically for those of you who will be in the San Francisco or LA area during the holidays and are interested in visiting the office to hear more information about our Summer Analyst program. Please note that the Summer Analyst program is only open to current juniors graduating in the class of 2010.
Bankers from all levels will be available to answer your questions. Due to limited space, the event will be by invitation only. 4. MORGAN STANLEY CODING COMPETITION 11/7-8
Test your programming and analytical skills this fall. The Morgan Stanley Coding Contest will challenge teams of students from four top technology schools to complete a hands-on, real-world programming task requiring sophisticated algorithm design and network programming. Applications will trade side-by-side in a simulated market and compete to optimize their portfolios.
Championship-round teams will be invited to tour Morgan Stanley's global headquarters in New York City, where an additional twist to the problem will be revealed. Top teams will win prizes for each team member and a $10,000 award for their school's Computer Science department. Meet us at your school on November 7–8.

5. NSF GRANT FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
NSF Grant for African-American Women in Computer Science Dr. Jason Black is the Principal Investigator of a recently awarded $552,000 NSF Grant entitled African-American Women in Computer Science. The grant provides scholarships from $4000 to $10,000 per year for female African American students.

The AAWCS program begins operation on July 1 and will run until June 30, 2012.

7. EDGE PROGRAM IN SCOTLAND INFO SESSION 11/5
CONSULT IN SCOTLAND THIS SUMMER!
You can gain real-world consulting experience with Encouraging Dynamic Global Entrepreneurs (EDGE) Scotland, a unique international summer program in entrepreneurship and consulting offered by Columbia University's Center for Career Education (CCE) in collaboration with Scottish Enterprise, Scotland's main economic development agency, and the University of Glasgow. This 8-week program brings together 16 students from Columbia University with students from five other participating universities from around the world to form teams, supported by industry experts, that consult small- and medium-sized enterprises in Dunbartonshire (just outside of Glasgow). These teams work to develop strategies and plans for business growth and development. Participants will receive a weekly allowance of £150.00, lunch during the 2-week Immersion Program, travel zone cards, and housing.
Program Components (Program runs from mid-June – mid-August 2009)
- 2-week immersion program on consulting, entrepreneurship, cross-cultural teamwork, and economic and community development
- 6 weeks of fieldwork including 2 team consulting assignments and a business plan
- A range of cultural activities, guest speaker events, and an end-of-program Awards Ceremony

8. NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION PROGRAM (NSOP) COORDINATOR APPLICATION
The 2009 New Student Orientation Program is seeking a new coordinator. This student would help plan such events as Class Act, serve as a liaison between the student committee members and professional staff, help coordinate the overall implementation of NSOP, gain incredible skills, and welcome all new students to campus.
Students are paid a $4500 stipend and live for free in an air conditioned single during the 2009 summer. Applications will be made available in 515 Lerner Hall and online at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/orientation.
