Prof. Vasilis Fthenakis
is the founder and director of the CLCA. He also leads the National PV Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Research Center operating at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) under the auspices of the DOE since 1982. The centers are synergistically engaging students and researchers in the two institutions and have formed close collaborations with the University of Utrecht, the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands, University of Stuttgart, and Chalmers University in the LCA area. VMF has led international forums on LCA of photovoltaic technologies, under the auspices of European Union’s-Joint Research Center and the International Energy Agency (IEA). He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the International Energy Foundation. CV

Prof. Nickolas Themelis is Stanley-Thompson Professor, Earth and Environmental Engineering and Director of Columbia’s Earth Engineering Center (EEC) at Columbia University and has been teaching Industrial Ecology and Life Cycle Analysis at Columbia University since 1996. Prof. Themelis and his graduate students have conducted Life Cycle Analysis and material flow studies on various systems including comparison of electroplating and thermal plasma coatings, waste-to-energy and waste management technologies. He is member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society and Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada. CV

Prof. Paul Duby is Professor of Mineral Engineering in the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering at Columbia University. His expertise and teaching experience is in physical chemistry and electrochemistry applied to inorganic processing. His recent research includes the electrochemical recycling of metals, the removal of hazardous contaminants from effluents or solid residues, and the modelling of fuel cell systems for optimum energy efficiency.
